Winterize newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials. Water in, so soil is moist down to and below the roots. Cover generously with 3 to 4 inches (10cm) leaf litter and other light mulches, to protect your soil and plants from the drying winds. Use a cedar or spruce commercial mulch if you are not sure leaf litter is disease free. Do not pack down. Keep covered with snow if possible. Do not use snow close to salted sidewalks and driveways.
